A Postcard From St. Simons Island, Georgia
Today we had a picnic at Neptune Park. St. Simons is great for relaxing by the sea or under the oaks. Tomorrow we're going to a concert at the bandstand. We love relaxing in our second home here!

About St. Simons Island
The Barrier Islands/Golden Isles area is one of the most scenic and historic areas of our nation's diverse lands. The Rockefeller's, Goodyear's and the Vanderbilt's all frequented these tropical resort-like islands from the late 1800's to mid 1900's. Their cottages, as well as the St. Simmons lighthouse are featured attractions in summertime historic tours. This group of eight islands has many activities for both tourists and residents alike. Fill your days with fishing, sea kayaking, bird watching, horseback riding and other open-air activities. The region, rich with history, offers a climate slightly cooler than Hawaii and Florida. Additionally, it offers a lower cost of living, a glimpse into America's past, and beautiful southern style vacation homes, beach resorts and rentals.
Housing
Second home prices on St. Simons Island differ greatly. You'll find some two- and three-bedroom homes priced in the mid $100s and low $200s. The island also offers large, sprawling beachfront homes priced in the $700s, $800s all the way up to $1 million-plus. Developers keep on constructing new, planned communities on St. Simons. One of the recent planned communities on the island is The Commons at Frederica, made up of 177 single-family home sites set amidst historic acreage. The Commons' developers have taken considerable measures to build its homes amongst the area's existing old oak trees instead of cutting them down for the sake of progress.
The island has a large array of condominiums and luxury apartments, as well as a big selection of vacation homes and condos for its seasonal residents. Because the weather on St. Simons Islands is moderately mild throughout the year, a visit here during the winter months will still give you ample opportunity to spend time outside. Rates for winter rentals are cheaper than during the summer months, when monthly rentals for two and three bedroom vacation condos can go as high as $1,500 or more.
Weather
Semi-tropical St. Simons Island enjoys a mild year-round climate with a yearly average temperature of 68 degrees.
