Housing
The Stowe area offers a blend of natural scenery, year-round outdoor activities, exceptional schools, a strong sense of community and an overall quality of life that is attracting an increasing number of people who want to make it their home. The town of Stowe is distinctly New England in its character and is full of nostalgia that stems greatly from its long time identity as the premier skiing village in the East. The average sale price of a primary home in Stowe under six acres is $188,363 and over six acres is $383,930. The average price of a secondary home in Stowe under six acres is $209,986 and over six acres is $485,632. In Stowe, second and first homes are being sought at a record rate and show no sign of easing in this climate. Sales inventory is at its lowest point since the late eighties and early nineties. Prices that have not yet reacted to this trend have recently started to solidify. Forecasts are that values are far greater than their prices would indicate and that they will inevitably start to climb.
Climate
Stowe averages 250 inches of snowfall per year - that's more than Sun Valley, Idaho. This is because Stowe Mountain's western face drops to only 90 feet above sea level - winds compress while passing a 4,300-foot upslope vertical. Thus Stowe receives a great deal of unforecast local "lake effect" snow from Lake Champlain, the Canadian Maritimes, and even the eastern Great Lakes-which often is not reported on weather forecasts. Average temperatures are 45 degrees in spring, 75 degrees in summer, 45 degrees in the fall and 20 degrees during the winter.
Closest Cities
Stowe is less than an hour by air from New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington and Montreal.
