A Postcard From Big Lake, Alaska Our second home on Big Lake is great year round. We love this area because it has kept a lot of its natural beauty through the years and is never crowded.

About Big Lake Known as Alaska's "Year Round Playground," Big Lake is a community on the short located in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area north of Anchorage near the Koyukuk River at the west end of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Big Lake is connected to other lakes in the area by dredged waterways. The 1996 Big Lake wildfire destroyed many trees and buildings in the area. Big Lake is a recreation area known for snow-machining in the winter. In the summer, it is popular for swimming, camping, boating and fishing. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race passes two miles south of Big Lake. Big Lake is situated 13 miles southwest of Wasilla, in the Chugach Mountains. It lies adjacent to Houston and Knik-Fairview.
Housing Big Lake is a great for the second home buyer. Lakefront homes average $260-400K with some in the 500,000 to million range depending which part of the lake. You can also get cabins starting around $85K on nearby lakes and lots on small lakes in the area for 15-35K. Big Lake waterfront lots average 75-135K depending on size and location. Lots with views of the lake are 35-80K. This area is growing and good buildable properties near water are getting harder to find. The lake is now open and activity is increasing.
