Greensboro

A Postcard From Greensboro, Georgia
Greensboro is a gorgeous region.  We are only a few minutes from Lake Oconee, and there are so many fun things to do on the water.  We've even picked up some new hobbies that our neighbor's introduced us to.

About Greensboro
Founded in 1786, Greensboro is steeped in history and its streets are lined with beautiful Ante-bellum homes, vacation homes and golf vacation rentals. Five historic districts and seven individual sites are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. A visit to Greensboro's "Gaol", a Bastille-like jail constructed in 1807 features one of the oldest penal structures in Georgia. Not only is golf a highlight in Greensboro, but history buffs, antique shoppers, fishermen and hunters all enjoy the varied sites and recreational opportunities that are available. Located 75 miles east of Atlanta, Greene County offers the best of both worlds -- the friendliness of small town living and a vision for future growth. Residents in Greene County enjoy a resort-like setting on Lake Oconee.

In Greensboro the sidewalk of the revitalized downtown is lined with shade trees and antique shops. The city and this part of Georgia are booming because of growth around Lake Oconee, a 19,000-acre lake with 374 miles of shoreline.  Greensboro is the county seat of Greene County, which used to be one of Georgia's poorest counties. Now, the annual per capita income of $23,000 is higher than the state average of $21,000. And that's not from rising incomes but from wealthier families moving in. Greene and two neighboring counties market the region as "Georgia's Lake Country."  Nine golf courses, including some of the nation's top-rated real estate courses have earned the region a reputation as a golfer's paradise.   Greene's population grew by more than 22% in the 1990s. Much of that growth was around Lake Oconee.  Lakefront developments are booming.

Climate
The Greensboro area is assured of four full and beautiful seasons with all the varied activities possible at different times of the year. There is boating in the summer and a desirable climate in the winter. Spring is a lively, vigorous time of renewal and autumns are very beautiful.  People from all over take vacations at that time so they can take tours of the countryside and view the colorful foliage.

Things To Do
Fishing, water skiing, boating, swimming, picnicking, camping and hiking are just some of the myriad of activities from which you can select if you want to play at the lake. Owned and operated by Georgia Power Company since 1979, the 19,050 acres of water and 374 miles of beautifully wooded shoreline (235 miles in Greene County) are no secret any more.
